Laura Frye gives 15 presentations in Lake Forest, Illinois

Laura Frye‘s home university, Lake Forest College, supported Kids’ Books Bolivia by purchasing 100 copies of her book Wilma for donation to 49 bilingual schools in the state of Illinois. During October and November of 2011, Laura worked with Kara Smith, a librarian at Oak Terrace Elementary School, to put together a 20-minute bilingual presentation of her book which she gave (mostly in Spanish) fifteen times to 2nd through 5th grade classes.  Students had fun “flying” to Bolivia on Google Earth and listening to a YouTube video of a young girl singing in Quechua. Laura brought a pollera (traditional skirt worn by Quechua girls) to show the students, and one brave 3rd grade boy put it on and spun around. After seeing that and cheering him on, many of the students wanted to do the same! Laura reminded the girls that if they were indigenous in Bolivia, they might wear something that heavy all the time.
